How To Help Children And Youth With Reading Problems

Can’t Read At All When Other Same-Age Children Or Youth Can; Can’t Read Easily At Grade Level: Can’t Read Out Loud; Can’t Remember What Has Just Been Read Out Loud And/Or Silently; Can’t Remember What Words Look Like; Can’t Understand What They Have Read; Skips Words

In modern life, reading is one of the most important skills a child or youth has to learn. It is important to solve reading challenges as quickly as possible. Reading challenges can create poor attitudes toward learning. Reading challenges can lower self-esteem and can begin habits of quitting. Reading challenges make going to school frustrating and unpleasant for children & youth. Children & youth who are frustrated with school may make themselves feel better with isolation or acting in ways dangerous to themselves or others. Reading challenges can be due to and complicated by a combination of factors, including: medical conditions; communication challenges; lack of practice using descriptive language; hearing and vision challenges; prolonged stress; physical or emotional discomfort caused by accidents, traumas and abuses of all kinds; nutritional imbalances; exposure to environmental pollutants; ineffective instruction; insufficient practice; inability to relax and think due to family patterns. Reading challenges can also be created when the parents are anxious for the child or youth to read well. Reading challenges are often signals that healing deeper issues is needed.

For Parents: • Uncorrected reading challenges severely limit a child or youth’s future. Reading is a survival skill that children & youth need to thrive. • Take action! Invest in your child or youth’s future. • It’s important not to panic or make a big deal out of the child or youth having this challenge. Reading happens best when the reader is relaxed. • Read out loud to your child or youth as much as possible–as early as possible and up to secondary graduation. Have lots of long talks about what has been read. • Get someone to help you if this is difficult. Let the child or youth choose the reading matter and discussion talks. • Good diet, enough deep sleep, calm home and daily exercise are also vitally important.
